Approach To Therapy
My approach to therapy is strongly humanistic or person-centered. A strong therapeutic relationship between the counselor and client is so vital for success in therapy. I take into account that all of my clients are individuals. We all have some life experiences in common that can bring us together but we also have our own unique perspectives, which need to be respected. It is my priority to help make therapy a positive, helpful, and enriching experience for you and will encourage you to be an active collaborator throughout the process.
In our sessions, I will show up as authentically myself because I find this often helps my clients feel more comfortable doing the same, rather than settling into what we think therapists and clients should be, do, or look like. This means you can expect to see me in very casual or non-corporate style clothing (I promise this does not interfere with my ability to access my education, experience, or professionalism and in fact is helps me feel comfortable so I can focus my attention on my clients) and you that if it is something you’re comfortable with, I will swear during our sessions.
I incorporate many techniques and philosophies from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Learning how to be mindful in the present moment is at the heart of contentment but we are too often torn from the present by thoughts dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Research has found trying to stop or change difficult, unwelcome thoughts can be counterproductive. Using ACT, I can teach you to change how you relate to your thoughts through acceptance, mindfulness, identifying values, and committing to action to create intentional, long-lasting change.
I will teach you new ways to cope, which will support healthy and mindful living. You can learn to create healthy boundaries, express yourself, appreciate yourself, and most importantly understand yourself. You can take back the power from your emotions and thoughts and create the life you have always wanted to live!
